The Wanchos of Arunachal Pradesh are a hardy and spirited community. Vivekananda Kendra Institute of Culture [VKIC] organised a Seminar in collaboration with the community's representative body, the Wancho Cultural Society, in February, 2006. It was an effort to genuinely examine the Wancho traditional systems from the community's perspective and correct deliberate mistranslations passed down from the British time onwards that have led to highly incorrect notions about the Wanchos' traditional systems. The source of information: the practicing members of the Wancho traditions. Be it the multi-dimensional educational system, Paa, or the concern for women; be it the upholding or safeguarding of traditional values or the environment or the vibrant self-governing institutions, Chieftainship or festivals and marriage systems the papers and interactions reveal the depth and far-sightedness of our ancestors and the eagerness of the present generation to adapt its rich legacy for cultural continuity. |
