520 _aThis study focuses on three theoretical categories, namely 'primitive accumulation', the idea of development, and the institutional framework. It aims to be a theoretical and empirical study of Kerala state, which is widely known for its successful development experience. The study seeks to examine the trajectory of the so-called 'primitive accumulation' and the case of substantial land grabs mainly by large plantations. The land that was appropriated in Kerala was mostly forestland, previously inhabited by Adivasi people. The study focuses on the case of major and medium plantations in the state, specifically those above 1000 acres and in the range of 200-1000 acres. For comparative purposes, the study draws on the case of land acquisition for mining and the process of mining in the 'central forest region', covering the states of Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand. It is important to note that the Kerala instance has received little scholarly attention. In summary, this study provides an in-depth analysis of the concept of 'primitive accumulation' and its role in the development process, specifically in the context of large plantations in Kerala. The study also examines the impact of institutional frameworks on the development process. The comparative analysis of land acquisition for mining and the process of mining in Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand provides a broader perspective on the issue of dispossession and accumulation. Overall, this study contributes to a better understanding of the complex dynamics of development, accumulation, and dispossession in contemporary India.
